Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Guides
The Sparrow controller connects as a standard MIDI device and integrates seamlessly with Cubase's MIDI Remote and Quick Controls:
- Open Cubase and go to Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup.
- Verify your Sparrow controller appears and is set to Active in the "In 'All MIDI Inputs'" column.
- Recording Expression (CC1 / CC11): Open the Key Editor on any instrument track (e.g. Spitfire, Orchestral Tools, Kontakt). When you hit record and move the faders, Cubase automatically writes smooth, unquantized automation curves into the CC lane.
- Track Quick Controls: Under Studio Setup > Track Quick Controls, select Sparrow as the MIDI Input. Click Learn, move your physical faders to assign them to Quick Controls 1–8, and click Apply.
- Cubase 12/13 MIDI Remote: In the bottom MIDI Remote tab, click Create MIDI Controller Surface, move your faders to auto-detect, and bind them to any mixer fader or plugin macro.
Logic Pro automatically detects the Sparrow controller upon connection with zero setup required for orchestral CC tracking. For plugin parameter mapping:
- Orchestral Tracking: Simply select any Software Instrument track in Logic and move your faders. CC1 (Dynamics) and CC11 (Expression) will register immediately.

Controller Assignments (Cmd + K):
- Press Cmd + K to open the Controller Assignments window.
- Click Learn Mode in the bottom right corner (the button turns blue).
- Click the on-screen knob, fader, or plugin dial you want to automate in Logic.
- Move the physical fader on your Sparrow controller.
- Click Learn Mode again to close it—the link is now permanently saved.
- Smart Controls: Press B to open Smart Controls, click the Inspector (i) tab, click Learn, and touch any Sparrow fader to link macro controls instantly.
To use Sparrow in Ableton Live for both track automation and MIDI Remote mapping:
- Open Ableton Live and navigate to Preferences > Link / Tempo / MIDI.
- Under the MIDI Ports list at the bottom, locate Input: Sparrow.
- Turn ON both the Track switch (enables playing instruments and recording CC automation) and the Remote switch (enables MIDI mapping to Live's mixer and macros).

MIDI Map Mode (Cmd/Ctrl + M):
- Press Cmd + M (Mac) or Ctrl + M (Windows). All mappable controls will highlight in purple/blue.
- Click any volume slider, send dial, plugin macro, or device on/off button.
- Slide the physical fader on your Sparrow.
- Press Cmd/Ctrl + M again to exit map mode.
Studio One features the powerful Control Link system:
- Go to Studio One > Options (Preferences on macOS) > External Devices.
- Click Add... and select New Control Surface.
- Set Receive From to your Sparrow controller and click OK.
- Open any instrument or effect plugin. In the top-left corner of the plugin window, you'll see the Control Link display showing the plugin parameter on the right.
- Move the Sparrow fader (it will show on the left). Click the Link Icon between them to bind them permanently.
Reaper provides native high-resolution CC tracking and parameter learning:
- Go to Options > Preferences > Audio > MIDI Devices.
- Right-click your Sparrow controller in the Input list and choose "Enable input" and "Enable input for control messages". Click Apply.
- Parameter Learn: Open any VST/AU plugin FX window. Tweak the on-screen knob, click the Param button in the FX header, choose Learn, and move the Sparrow fader.
- Action List Mapping: Open the Actions window (?), select any command (e.g. Master Track Volume, Scrub, Zoom), click Add Shortcut, and slide your fader to bind hardware control to Reaper actions.
Yes! While Pro Tools uses proprietary HUI protocols for its main mixer faders, the Sparrow works natively as a high-precision CC controller for all virtual instruments and synth plugins:
- In Pro Tools, navigate to Setup > MIDI > MIDI Input Devices and make sure the Sparrow checkbox is enabled.
- Ensure Options > MIDI Thru is checked.
- Load any virtual instrument (Kontakt, Falcon, Serum, Omnisphere, Spitfire). Right-click any on-screen slider and select "Learn MIDI CC".
- Move the Sparrow fader to complete the mapping. When recording on the instrument track, your fader sweeps will be captured directly into the Pro Tools MIDI automation lanes.
FL Studio makes linking hardware faders instantaneous:
- Press F10 to open MIDI Settings.
- Under the Input list, select your Sparrow controller and click the Enable button (the indicator turns green).
- Set the Controller Type to (generic controller). Close settings.
- Linking Controls: Right-click any knob, mixer fader, or synth parameter and select "Link to controller...".
- Move the physical fader on your Sparrow—the window will automatically close and the link is complete.
Bitwig Studio supports generic CC controllers natively:
- Navigate to Dashboard > Settings > Controllers.
- Click Add Controller, choose Generic > MIDI CC, and set the MIDI Input port to Sparrow.
- Right-click any knob, macro, or modulation device in Bitwig and choose "Map to Controller or Key".
- Slide the Sparrow fader to lock the parameter.
- Open Reason and go to Edit > Preferences (Reason > Preferences on Mac) > Control Surfaces.
- Click Add manually. Set Manufacturer to "Other" and Model to "MIDI Control Surface".
- Set the MIDI Input port to Sparrow and click OK.
- Right-click any rack parameter and select "Edit Remote Override Mapping".
- Check Learn from control surface input and move your Sparrow fader.
Yes! GarageBand will automatically detect the Sparrow for continuous CC recording on Software Instrument tracks. To map faders to Smart Controls:
- Press B to open the Smart Controls panel at the bottom of the screen.
- Click the Inspector (i) button on the left of Smart Controls.
- Click Learn, click the on-screen knob, and slide your physical Sparrow fader.
Hardware, Ports & Specifications
No drivers are needed! Every controller we make is 100% class-compliant USB-MIDI. When you plug it into a Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel), Windows PC (10/11), iPad/iOS, or Linux computer, the operating system's native MIDI subsystem recognizes it immediately. No background daemon or bloatware is ever required.
The Sparrow V2 features two independent USB-C ports engineered for studio reliability:
- Primary USB-C (Host Data + Power): The main connection to your computer, laptop, or iPad. Transmits high-speed USB-MIDI data and draws bus power.

Auxiliary USB-C (5V Power-Only / Redundancy): Provides isolated 5V power. This solves two common studio issues:
- Headless / DAWless Operation: Power the controller with any USB power bank, wall adapter, or pedalboard power supply (e.g. Cioks USB) and send MIDI directly out of the 3.5mm TRS port into synths or guitar pedals — no computer required!
- Power Redundancy: For professional touring rigs or crowded studio USB hubs, plugging any 5V USB charger into this auxiliary port provides dedicated, isolated power for maximum reliability.
No. Sparrow controllers feature premium, ultra-smooth manual linear faders. Manual faders are the industry standard for film composers and orchestral mockups because they provide whisper-quiet operation (zero motor hum or chatter in delicate mic environments), natural mechanical resistance for expressive swells, and zero motor calibration lag.
Zero jitter. The Sparrow V2 uses a multi-stage approach: dedicated hardware filtering on every analog input line combined with intelligent firmware hysteresis algorithms. When your hands leave the faders, they remain dead-silent with zero phantom CC spikes or unwanted timeline clutter.
The Sparrow V2 draws approximately 35mA @ 5V DC under normal operation, with peak current under 45mA. This is less than 8% of a standard USB 2.0 port's 500mA rating, meaning it can easily run off mobile devices, unpowered hubs, or iPad batteries for hours.
Every Sparrow V2 order ships with two premium 1.5-meter (~5 ft) nylon-braided cables:
- 1 × 1.5M Braided USB-C to USB-C Cable
- 1 × 1.5M Braided USB-C to USB-A Cable
You have everything needed to plug into modern Thunderbolt/USB-C laptops or legacy USB-A studio towers right out of the box.
- Sparrow V1 (Legacy): Built with a single USB Mini-B port and has a small recessed reset button hole on the bottom plate. Powered by a Teensy microcontroller.
- Sparrow V2 (Current): Built with Dual USB-C ports, a 3.5mm TRS MIDI output jack, oversized elastomer feet, and buttonless firmware updates.
Both generations are 100% fully supported in The Aviary!
If your controller has a Mini-USB port and shows "Current Firmware: Legacy" in The Aviary, you can upgrade to Universal v3.0.0:
- Download and install The Aviary Desktop App (aviary.themidimaker.com/download). Firmware flashing cannot be done in a web browser.
- Plug in your V1 controller. Click "New firmware available" at the bottom.
- When prompted, flip the controller over and use a paperclip or pin to gently press the recessed button through the hole on the bottom plate.
- The app flashes the Bridge firmware, prompts for a second button press, and flashes Universal v3.0.0.
- Unplug the USB cable for 5 seconds and reconnect to clear the operating system's MIDI cache.

Yes! The Sparrow is fully class-compliant and works natively with iPadOS and iOS:
- USB-C iPads (Air, Pro, Mini 6th gen+): Connect directly using the included USB-C to USB-C cable. No adapter needed.
- Lightning iPads (older models): Use Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter (or Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter for power pass-through) with the included USB-C to USB-A cable.
- Compatible iOS Apps: GarageBand, Cubasis 3, AUM, BeatMaker 3, Korg Gadget, and any app that accepts standard MIDI CC input.
- The Aviary Web App works in Chrome on iPadOS for on-the-go CC editing.
The Aviary Configurator (Web & Desktop)
Both applications share the same interface and mapping capabilities:
- Web App (aviary.themidimaker.com): Zero installation required. Runs directly in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Brave using Web MIDI. Instant access from any computer.
- Desktop App (macOS & Windows): Built for offline studio setups. It runs completely standalone without an internet connection and is required for performing hardware firmware updates.
Apple has chosen not to implement the W3C Web MIDI API in Safari due to security policies. To use the web editor, please open Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Brave on macOS. Alternatively, Mac users can simply download our free standalone Aviary Desktop App!
Yes! The Sparrow is class-compliant USB-MIDI and works out of the box with any Linux distribution running ALSA (which includes Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and virtually every modern distro). No drivers or kernel modules are needed.
Chromebooks with ChromeOS also work natively — The Aviary Web App runs in Chrome on ChromeOS with full Web MIDI support, giving you the complete configurator experience on affordable hardware.
No account is required! You can click "Start Offline Mode" on the welcome screen to configure your controller immediately.
If you choose to create a free account, The Aviary will securely backup your custom profiles, layout templates, fader labels, and device aliases to the cloud so you can access them seamlessly across all your studio computers.
When you change a CC number or channel in The Aviary, it appears in orange as "Pending Sync". Clicking "Sync to Hardware" sends a MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) command that permanently burns the configuration into the controller's onboard EEPROM memory.
Once synced, your controller retains these settings forever—even when unplugged, powered down, or connected to another computer or synthesizer.
Yes! You can plug in multiple Sparrow controllers simultaneously. In the top bar of The Aviary, a device dropdown menu will display all connected hardware. You can click "+ Rename" to assign custom aliases to each unit (e.g. "Black Case 3x100", "Wood 4x100", or "Synth Rig") to keep them cleanly organized.
Each connected Sparrow appears as a separate USB-MIDI device with a unique identifier, so your DAW can distinguish and route CCs from each controller independently — perfect for large orchestral templates or multi-instrument live performance rigs.
Guitar Pedals & Outboard Gear (TRS MIDI)
The Sparrow V2 uses the official MIDI Manufacturers Association Type-A 3.5mm TRS standard:
- Tip: Data (TX / Pin 5)
- Ring: 3.3V Power (Pull-up / Pin 4)
- Sleeve: Ground / Shield (Pin 2)
Yes! You can connect the Sparrow directly into MIDI-enabled pedals to perform hands-on fader sweeps over delay feedback, reverb mix, filter cutoffs, and pitch depth:
- Boss 200 Series (DD-200, MD-200, EQ-200, OD-200): Native 3.5mm TRS Type-A. Connect directly using our 3.5mm to 3.5mm Type-A cable!
- Strymon, Chase Bliss, Eventide: Use a 3.5mm TRS Type-A to 1/4" TRS cable (or MIDI interface box like the Chase Bliss Midibox / Strymon Conduit).
- Standalone Power: Remember you can power the Sparrow V2 via its Auxiliary USB-C port with any USB wall plug or pedalboard power supply (e.g. Cioks USB) to run without a computer!
Before the MMA standardized on Type-A, some manufacturers wired the Tip and Ring pins in reverse (Type-B):
- Type-A Gear (Native Plug & Play with Sparrow): Boss, Korg, Roland, Make Noise, Elektron, Dreadbox, Akai, Moog.
- Type-B Gear (Requires Type-A to Type-B Crossover Cable): Arturia (BeatStep/KeyStep), 1010music (Blackbox/Bluebox), older Novation.
- 5-Pin DIN Gear: Traditional synth/rack gear and pedals with full-size MIDI ports (e.g. Boss 500 series DD-500/RV-500/MD-500). Connect using our 3.5mm TRS Type-A to 5-Pin DIN cable.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
Windows and macOS handle USB-MIDI drivers differently:
- macOS (Multi-Client MIDI): macOS allows multiple applications (e.g. Cubase and The Aviary web app) to share the same controller simultaneously.
- Windows (Exclusive Port Lock): The standard Windows USB-MIDI driver locks the device to whichever program opens it first. If your DAW (Ableton, FL Studio, Studio One) is running, Windows will block the Aviary web browser from accessing the controller.
- Check your cable: Make sure you are using the included braided data cable. Some third-party cables are "charge-only" and have no data wires.
- Avoid unpowered hubs: Connect directly to your computer's USB port or provide auxiliary power to Port 2 on the Sparrow V2.
- Grant browser permissions: When you open Aviary in Chrome or Edge, make sure you click "Allow" on the prompt asking to "Control and reprogram your MIDI devices".
- Close conflicting software (Windows): Ensure other MIDI apps are closed so Windows releases the port.
Sparrow controllers are built with studio-grade linear potentiometers. In dusty environments, dust particles can settle into the open track. If a fader ever feels stiff or scratchy, apply a short spray of Caig DeoxIT FaderLube (F5) directly along the lever slot and glide the fader 10–20 times.
Caution: Never use standard WD-40, alcohol, or contact cleaner on faders, as this strips the factory damping lubricant.

- Defective or Damaged in Transit: Free return shipping. We will immediately replace or refund your unit.
- Change of Mind: Item must be in original condition with all included cables and packaging. Return shipping cost is deducted from the final refund.
- Custom Built Orders: Custom commissions are non-refundable unless defective, as they are built to bespoke customer specifications.
All Sparrow controllers are backed by a 1-Year Limited Hardware Warranty from the original date of purchase. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use conditions.
- What's Covered: Manufacturing defects, faulty USB ports, non-functional faders, PCB or firmware failures, and dead-on-arrival units.
- What's Not Covered: Physical damage from drops, liquid exposure, or misuse; cosmetic wear; modifications or unauthorized repairs; and normal component wear from extended professional use.
