Hardware Quick Setup
Connect and configure your controller in three simple steps:
Connect to Your Rig
Choose your connection mode:
- Computer / DAW: Connect the Primary USB-C port (Host Data + Power) using either included 1.5M braided cable (USB-C/C or USB-C/A). Fully class-compliant—no drivers needed.
- Crowded USB Hubs: If your studio USB hub suffers from voltage sags, plug any standard 5V USB charger into the Auxiliary USB-C port for isolated, clean power redundancy.
- Standalone / Synths: Power the Auxiliary USB-C port via a wall plug or battery bank, and connect the 3.5mm TRS Out directly to your synth or pedal rig without a computer.

Download the free Aviary Desktop App for macOS or Windows.
Map & Sync to Hardware
Once connected in The Aviary:
- Touch any fader on your desk—it will instantly highlight in real time on screen.
- Assign your desired MIDI Channel (1–16) and CC Number (0–127).
- Click the green "Sync to Hardware" button in the top header.

Steinberg Cubase & Nuendo
- Open Cubase and navigate to Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup.
- Ensure your Sparrow controller shows as Active in the "In 'All MIDI Inputs'" column.
- To map Quick Controls: Go to Track Quick Controls, click Learn, move a Sparrow fader, and apply.
- For orchestral expression: Open the Key Editor on any instrument track; Sparrow automatically records continuous CC1 (Dynamics) and CC11 (Expression) in real time.
Apple Logic Pro
- Logic Pro automatically detects the Sparrow controller upon connection.
- To map any software knob, slider, or channel volume: Press Cmd + K to open Controller Assignments.
- Click Learn Mode in the bottom right corner.
- Click the on-screen parameter in Logic, then slide the physical fader on your Sparrow.
- Close Controller Assignments—your parameter is now permanently linked.
Ableton Live
- Open Ableton Live and open Preferences > Link / Tempo / MIDI.
- Under MIDI Ports, find the Sparrow Input and turn ON both Track and Remote.
- Press Cmd + M (Mac) or Ctrl + M (Windows) to enter MIDI Map Mode (screen controls turn blue).
- Click any macro knob, volume slider, or plugin parameter, then move a Sparrow fader to link them.
- Press Cmd/Ctrl + M again to exit map mode and perform.
PreSonus Studio One
- Navigate to Studio One > Options > External Devices and click Add...
- Select New Control Surface, set Receive From to your Sparrow controller, and click OK.
- Open any plugin or mixer channel, tweak the on-screen parameter, move a Sparrow fader, and click the Link Icon in the top left Control Link panel.
Cockos Reaper
- Navigate to Options > Preferences > Audio > MIDI Devices.
- Right-click the Sparrow in the Input list and choose Enable input and Enable input for control messages.
- Open any plugin, click the Param button in the FX window, select Learn, and move the physical fader on the Sparrow.
Avid Pro Tools
- Go to Setup > MIDI > MIDI Input Devices and verify Sparrow is checked.
- Right-click assignable virtual instrument dials (Kontakt, Falcon, Serum) and click Learn MIDI CC.
- Move the Sparrow fader to bind it instantly.
Image-Line FL Studio
- Press F10 to open MIDI Settings. Highlight Sparrow under Input and click Enable.
- Right-click any knob, slider, or plugin dial in FL Studio and select Link to controller...
- Move the physical fader on your Sparrow to complete the link automatically.
The Cinematic Scoring Standard
Recommended CC mappings for modern orchestral sample libraries (Spitfire, Orchestral Tools, VSL, Cinematic Studio Series, Audio Imperia):

Hardware Synth & Guitar Pedal Control
The Sparrow V2 features an official 3.5mm TRS MIDI Type-A output that allows you to control hardware synths and MIDI-enabled pedals with or without a computer.
Controlling Guitar & Effects Pedals
Get 100mm fader precision over wet/dry mixes, delay times, feedback loops, and modulation depth on:
- Boss 200 Series (DD-200, MD-200, EQ-200, OD-200): Connect directly using our standard 3.5mm TRS Type-A cable.
- Strymon, Chase Bliss, Eventide, Line 6: Connect via 3.5mm-to-1/4" TRS cables or dedicated MIDI distribution boxes.
Cable Compatibility Guide
Verify your outboard gear before connecting:
- Type-A Gear (Native Plug & Play): Boss, Korg, Roland, Make Noise, Elektron, Dreadbox, Akai, Moog.
- Type-B Gear: Arturia (BeatStep/KeyStep), 1010music (Blackbox/Bluebox), older Novation. Requires our Type-A to Type-B cable.
- 5-Pin DIN Gear: Traditional synths and rack gear. Requires our 3.5mm TRS Type-A to 5-Pin DIN cable.

How to Identify Your Model
- Sparrow V1: Features a single USB Mini port and a small recessed reset button hole on the bottom plate.
- Sparrow V2 (latest): Features Dual USB-C ports (Host Data & Power + Auxiliary Power), a 3.5mm TRS-A MIDI Out jack, and buttonless firmware updates.

Upgrading to Universal v3.0.0 Firmware
If your controller displays "Current Firmware: Legacy" in the bottom status bar of The Aviary, upgrading to Universal v3.0.0 unlocks modern Aviary preset saving, discrete LED button feedback, and stable USB communication across macOS and Windows.
- Download The Aviary Desktop App: Firmware flashing requires the desktop app (aviary.themidimaker.com/download) and cannot be performed in a web browser due to operating system USB security restrictions.

- The Paperclip Reset Button: When prompted by the app to enter bootloader mode, use a paperclip or pin to gently press the recessed button through the small hole on the bottom plate of your controller while it is plugged into your computer.
- The 2-Stage Bridge Flash: Legacy units automatically flash a temporary bridge firmware first, prompt for a second button press, and then complete the Universal v3.0.0 flash.
- Clear the OS MIDI Cache: Once flashing completes, unplug the USB cable for 5 seconds and plug it back in. This forces macOS and Windows to recognize the new Universal identity cleanly.
