Firmware Updates

Keeping your Sparrow controller's firmware up to date ensures you have the latest features, performance improvements, and bug fixes. Firmware updates are performed through The Aviary Desktop App.

IMPORTANT: Firmware flashing requires the Desktop App — the web version will prompt you to download it.

What is Firmware?

Firmware is the software that runs on your controller. It handles MIDI message formatting, sending/receiving messages, and hardware communication. The Aviary app communicates with it over USB.

Checking for Updates

The current firmware version and update status appear in the footer of the Configuration screen in The Aviary. If a new version is available, the link turns amber and reads "New firmware available". Click it to open the Firmware Updater.

Sparrow V2 Controllers (USB-C)

These are the current-generation controllers with dual USB-C ports.

  1. Open The Aviary Desktop App and connect your Sparrow V2 via USB-C.
  2. If an update is available, the footer will show "New firmware available" in amber text. Click it.
  3. The app downloads the firmware file and reboots your device into Bootloader mode automatically.
  4. The Aviary detects that your controller is ready to receive the new firmware and pushes the necessary files to it.
  5. The controller reboots with the new firmware. The whole process takes under 30 seconds.

No manual button presses or reset pins needed for V2 controllers.

Sparrow V1 Controllers (Mini-USB)

These are legacy-generation controllers identified by having a Mini-USB port.

  1. Download and install The Aviary Desktop App from aviary.themidimaker.com/download. Firmware flashing cannot be done in a web browser.
  2. Plug in your V1 controller via Mini-USB.
  3. If your controller shows "Current Firmware: Legacy" in The Aviary, it needs to be upgraded to Universal v3.0.0.
  4. Click "New firmware available" at the bottom of the screen.
  5. If your device is pre-v2.1.0 firmware, a "bridge" update must be applied first. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.
  6. When prompted, use a paperclip or SIM tool to press the recessed reset button through the small hole on the bottom of the controller.
  7. The app flashes the Bridge firmware, prompts for a second button press, and then flashes Universal v3.0.0.
  8. The controller reboots. You may need to restart The Aviary to detect it with the new firmware.

Clearing MIDI Cache After Update

After a firmware update, your operating system may cache old MIDI device information. If your DAW doesn't recognize the controller correctly after updating:

macOS:

  1. Close all DAWs and The Aviary.
  2. Open Terminal and run: sudo killall -9 coreaudiod
  3. macOS will restart the audio subsystem. Reconnect your controller.

Windows:

  1. Close all DAWs and The Aviary.
  2. Unplug the controller.
  3. Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the Sparrow device and select "Uninstall device".
  5. Plug the controller back in. Windows will re-enumerate it with fresh driver bindings.

Troubleshooting

The firmware update seems stuck

Don't unplug the controller. Wait at least 60 seconds. If still stuck, close The Aviary, unplug and replug the controller, and try again. The controller will not be bricked — it has a failsafe bootloader.

The Aviary doesn't detect my controller after updating

Try the MIDI cache clear steps above. Also try a different USB port or cable. On macOS, check System Information → USB to verify the device is visible at the hardware level.

I see "Bridge firmware required" but the reset button doesn't seem to work

Press firmly with a paperclip — the button requires deliberate pressure. The hole is on the bottom of the controller. If your controller predates 2022 and has no pin hole, email Support@TheMIDIMaker.com.

My V1 controller shows as "Unknown Device"

This usually means the bridge firmware didn't complete. Restart The Aviary, reconnect the controller, and attempt the update again. The app will resume from where it left off.
